Date: 8/11/96
Players: JC, Kathy, Chris, Richard
Characters: Rio & Glow, DM & Dre, Raagnar, Elrin, Beccah
In the morning Elrin somehow determines that the 'Bracers' he took from Angstrom are not helping him and speculates that he can't wear them with his armor. Beccah, having no armor, pipes up that if they're magical she could use them more than anyone else, especially if they're 'Bracers of Protection' as would seem to make sense.
SIDE NOTE: WE WENT THROUGH IDENTIFYING MANY OF OUR TREASURE ITEMS. THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENS IN THE FUTURE AT ELRINS GUILD AFTER WE GET BACK TO WATERDEEP. RIO IS CARRYING THE DAGGER, WHICH HE DOES NOT MENTION, AND TWO RINGS FROM ANGSTROM. THE FIRST IS A 'RING OF WILD MAGIC' AND THE SECOND IS USELESS SINCE IT'S A 'RING OF RECALL' AND RETURNS THE WEARER TO ANGSTROM'S BEDROOM IN THE TOWER.
Deciding to see what lies beyond the laboratory doors we return and unbar the doors. The creatures beyond crash through. Owlbears.
MELEE.
We defeat the Owlbears easily and advance into the room. It's an overgrown garden with a motionless figure standing within a shimmering area of what is obviously magical force of some kind. Angstroms apprentice identifies him as the former Lord of this keep. Rio investigates the room thoroughly and discovers that the walls are much as expected with the exception of one upper corner that has some fresh water slowly flowing from a small opening. Rio climbs up the debris pile and investigates further. It's a small opening, too small for owlbears or even humans to travel through.
Returning to the group he finds Elrin trying to cast 'Dispel Magic' on the motionless figure. It is unsuccessful. The druid then tries the spell himself and is successful. The man slumps to the floor. Beccah immediately begins healing him and Rio casts 'Remove Curse' followed by 'Cure Serious Wounds'. Again the druid's spells are effective and slowly he looks up asking if 'that despicable man' is dead. Rio answers to the affirmative and he relaxes some accepting water and then food. He tells us that there is a vertical zone of wild magic intersecting this keep. It appeared the day Mystra died. Angstrom appeared perhaps a week later.
Since it is still early, and since our work in UnderMountain appears done we decide to depart and begin the return journey to Waterdeep. Utilizing three different 'Fly' spells we begin the journey across. A group of small humanoid creatures appears out of one of the walls and throws small spears at the group. Only Dre and Raagnar are hit but they do not stop to retaliate. The fly spells don't last very long and too soon sputter out and we are walking again.
As we come to an intersection a creature seems to appear out of nowhere and attacks Elrin. A bizarre circular creature with a three arms, three legs and a large mouth at the top of its pointy-head. A Xorn that, for some reason, appears to be trying to rip Elrins backpack off his back rather than attack him personally. Elrin and Kaeldric, due to the narrowness of the corridor, are the only ones who can attack. The battle lasts for several rounds before the Xorn is killed. Rio examines it carefully commenting on the sharpness of the teeth that are obviously used for tunneling through solid rock. Elrin and Raagnar spend some time removing the creatures' teeth, each retrieving five. They are each roughly 3" long and 2" wide and are so sharp that Elrin severely cuts himself on one of them. Raagnar verbally comments that he thinks he'll make a set of 'Brass Knuckles' out of his and this gives everyone a pause considering the damage that such a weapon could do.
We continue on to the first set of stairs. By now it's early afternoon and we stop to have a late lunch. Then, continuing, we have just gotten to the top of the stairs and are passing by a side passageway when there is a surge of 'Wild Magic' and some of our magical items lose their magic. Unfortunately there is no outward sign and we won't know this until later when we try to use the items. Rio, although he doesn't know it yet, has lost the 'Staff of the Woodlands', both his rings 'Warmth' and 'Fire Protection', and his continual light gem. Glow lost her continual light gem.
As we continue on two small reptilian creatures come from down the passageway. Rio sees them coming and...
Rio, Elrin, Raagnar, Jerinydd, and Brona are all turned to stone by the gaze of the basilisks. Glow, Dre, Beccah and Kaeldric are the only ones who are unaffected and manage to kill one of the basilisks and drive away the other via Glows 'Molecular Agitation'. Glow then tries to telepathically contact her grandmother, the great druid, to let her know what has happened. Kathy will determine what happens and let us know. Truly, now more than ever, our fate is in the hands of the DM.
