Begin on the 12th of Flamerule.
Illuverin uses the opportunity in the early morning hours to give Nan the diamond ring.
"I know you don't really have a family anymore," he says gazing into her eyes as they lay together, "but I want very much to be a part of yours, and have you be part of mine."
The next morning the two are waken at about 9:00 a.m. by a soft knock on the door and the offer of breakfast. Rising quickly to oblige the whole group is treated to a wonderful spread (at which the host is not present, having not woken up yet). Afterward we leave word of our gratitude with the staff for the host and then take a carriage back to GhostWalk.
When Dory opens the door there is the flash of a strange Glyph on the door and a concussive blast of Cold. Illuverin and Nan both collapse. The others get us inside the now frost covered living room and Frau Blucher does a Laying of Hands on Illuverin. Unfortunately Dory is dead. Nan is in shock but will recover.
A runner is sent to get Saunder from his temple and after a few minutes the city guard shows up and asks about the incident. When Saunder returns he casts Cure Serious Wounds on Nan, A'Tora, Caland, and Lew. Saunder recognizes the glyph when we show him a copy and says it's called Lumot The Freezer.
When Erin returns we let him know what happened. When Caland voices his concern that it is the Ice Mage who is responsible the Barbarian immediately demands we set out to seek his death to avenge Dory. When we question Tristan the stable boy he remembers seeing a tall man completely covered by a black cloak walking away from the door shortly after the dung collector arrived. He says they both saw the figure and both remember shiny black boots.
The group, without Illuverin and Nan, travel to the North Gate to relay this new information to the guardsmen. Shortly before they return an old man named Brother Brummel arrives. He's the choir master from the orphanage where Dory grew up and has come to oversee the ceremony for Dory's funeral which will be tomorrow at dawn.
As we get lunch we find Erin deep in thought. He's bothered by the timing and is wondering why the scoundrel who wrote the glyph did it during the morning hours instead of during the night when they would have been less likely to be seen. This starts the group to wondering about any of the other guests at last nights party and considering physical builds and dispositions.
Caland needs to go to the Wyrnhole, where the dragon sage lives, and A'Tora decides she will go as well. Again Nan and Illuverin stay at GhostWalk. They return at about 4:00 bells in the afternoon and the group spends the afternoon and evening in quiet activity.
The next morning, after a cold breakfast, we go to the service for Dory at the City of the Dead. When we return we find an elderly dwarf with an air of nobility waiting on our front porch. He brings us an object from Jaret. Lew unwraps the bundle revealing the Dragonsword. (+2 Dragonslayer, +4 against true dragons, triple damage against green dragons) Illuverin examines it and the scabbard carefully. Frau Blucher prepares a late brunch for all of us and afterward the dwarf departs.
Nan and Illuverin get a carriage back to the south part of town. He drops her off at home and then continues to his apartment. He collects some things, inquires after any messages, and then returns to the GhostWalk. When he gets there the group is being interviewed by one of the Magister's of Waterdeep. He tells her of what little of the event he remembers and then settles down for a short snooze before getting ready for the darts tournament.
The group gets to the Stone Mage Tavern with plenty of time to spare and Illuverin makes sure to find Dre to wish her a happy birthday. He waves to Raagnar as he places his entrance fee with a lovely redhead that Illuverin knows but can't quite remember her name. She introduces herself as Sarana and tells Illuverin that he'll not be able to use his darts that he brought.
There are 15 contestants. Illuverin with the role of 8 of 100 is the third to go and has an absolutely miserable round. Nan follows him and shows why she is the reigning champion. As the others go through their rounds Illuverin is easily eliminated and is reduced to a spectator. Nan easily makes it to the second round by being in the lead after the first round with one other individual.
Nan makes it through to the third round despite some mediocre throws in the second and has a great third round score advancing to the final against Valeceris the Buccaneer. During the final break in the tournament Lew spills a drink on one of the questionable characters in the audience. Illuverin learns later that it was on purpose to see how tall the man was.
The fourth and final round begins with two bullseyes, one from each contestant. Then, since it is now a final elimination and the contestants are alternating turns, Nan goes first and hits with another bullseye. It is sufficient to win her her fourth straight title. There is much celebration and the party goes on well into the night. We get back to GhostWalk late but Saunder opens the door and lets us in.
The next morning after breakfast, Tristan brings us a message that appears to be from Khelben Arunsen. It says to meet him in the early morning hours at the western gate to the City of the Dead, and to come prepared.
That day Illuverin and Nan spend the day together in private and Illuverin does not want it to end. They make love tenderly and ferociously, each with the knowledge that it may be the last time given the nature of the upcoming journey and the perils that will undoubtedly be involved. Nan smothers Illuverin with kisses promising to do so again and again when and if he returns.
"I'll return to you my love." Illuverin says returning the affection. "And if not then all I have in this world is yours for there is no one else in my heart or life for whom it would have any meaning." They lay together in silence for a while and then help one another dress. It is with a very heavy heart that he helps her into the carriage that arrives to take her back to the House of Good Spirits. He watches the carriage until it rounds the corner out of sight and then with a heavy sigh he turns back into the house.
When Caland and A'Tora return from the Wyrmhole the group has dinner. Then, before retiring for the evening to ensure a full 8 hours sleep, Caland casts Stone Skin on Lew and Illuverin. (Illuverin is protected from 6 individual attacks, although he does not know the exact number.)
Early the next morning we take a carriage to the western gate of the City of the Dead and Khelben is there waiting for us with another woman and some members of the city guard. The woman is Khelben's wife and will be assisting in the opening of the gate we will be using to travel to Myth Dranor.
Khelben leads us to a crypt and unlocks the gate. Within he leads us to a doorway which is glowing with a faint blue light where he and his wife take up positions beside the door and begin to chant. The doorway begins to glow with a brighter golden light and finally Khelben motions us through.
With a marching order set of Erin, Illuverin, Caland, A'Tora, Lew, and then Saunder we step through. We arrive in a dimly lit courtyard as the sun is just coming up. The first thing we notice is a large red floating disk that begins to glow brighter and brighter. There are 20 or so people facing the east. They are all naked and praying to Lythander. Apparently we were expected and are asked by a large gentlemen to join in the service.
After the service the man identifies himself as the Hand of Lythander and he welcomes us to Myth Dranor telling us they (the Clerics) will aid us in time of need. As we leave the Temple of Lythander and travel into the forest before reaching the city proper we notice that the forest is very much alive. When we reach the edge of the city we call tell that the wildlife is encroaching from all sides into the ruins. Although there is abundant forest sounds behind us ahead, within the city proper there is an eerie silence.
As we pass into the city itself there is a faint shimmering curtain which is the area of effect of the Mithil. Once inside the realization that the adventure is begun in earnest settles over Illuverin and he sharpens his awareness as much as possible looking around for any signs of trouble.
