9-1-1 (A LAMENT FOR THE DAY)
Copyright 2001 by John Chivian

It was a day like any other when the telephone softly rang
A frantic voice on the other end was in tears
The unthinkable has happened, go look at your TV screen
For it is showing the sum of all our fears

There's a hole in my heart
And black smoke in the sky
A silver bird flying never more
The ending of an era
A new world has come today
I never got a chance to say goodbye

Then I watched the second dagger with shock and disbelief
Surely this can only be a dream
The unspeakable has happened in my home so far away
Grim details upon the TV screen

There's a hole in my heart
And orange fire in the sky
A silver bird flying never more
The ending of an era
And the war has come today
Bringing only the question as to why

So I turned to my lover, she had teardrops in her eyes
And a look upon her face I'd never seen
The family all around us, they were pale as cold moonlight
Inside us all began a silent scream

There's a hole in my heart
And I could not bear the news
Of silver birds flying never more
The ending of an era
A war brought home today
By those with nothing left to lose

We watched the towers crumble and the rage began to build
Tempered in loss and steel resolve
And I knew the world around us, it would never be the same
In memory of all these many lost

There's a hole in my heart
And choking dust is in the street
Silver birds flying never more
The ending of an era
And the war has come today
Destiny we all now go to meet

Then I watched as those around me all reached out to lend a hand
Descending on the scene as angels would
From all across the country came the great family of man
Together side-by-side the nation stood
