CHIVIAN
JAY S., born March 17th, 1931 in Newark, NJ. Jay collapsed suddenly October 18th and died peacefully a week later on October 25th, 2004 without regaining consciousness. He was a loving husband, devoted father and adoring grandfather. He was a resident of Richardson since 1960. He is preceded in death by his parents - Herman and Flora Chivian. Jay earned his BS in Physics from Franklin and Marshall University in 1952 and went on to earn his Masters and PHD degrees in Physics from Lehigh University in 1960. He began his professional career at Texas Instruments, followed by 31 years employment at Lockheed Martin. He retired in 1996. He was a member of the American Physical Society, the IEEE and the Optical Society of America and was the author of numerous publications. He held 9 US and foreign patents. Jay loved to travel, especially in his RV with family, friends and his devoted dog - Casey. He was an avid reader, a sports fan, skilled handyman, animal lover, former Scout Master and enjoyed researching family history. Jay was a member of several environmental organizations and actively involved in the democratic process. He was tolerant, wise and always there when you needed him. He was a gentleman of the old school and a true renaissance man. Jay is survived by his loving wife of 48 years - Carolyn, by his son John Chivian of Frisco, TX and daughter and son in law - Anne & Chris Martin of Loveland, CO. He leaves 4 grandchildren - Matt & Alex Chivian and Kelsey & Jeffrey Martin. And his dog Casey. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving family members, including John & Meg Papa of Bristol, CT and Jackie & Mickey Herzlinger of Springfield, NJ. A scientist to the end, Jay has donated his body to Southwestern Medical School. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the charity of your choice. His memory is a blessing!
